Overview of Work Visa Types in Malaysia
Malaysia offers four main categories of work passes, each designed for specific employment situations.
Employment Pass (EP) is the most common work visa and is designed for high-skilled professionals working for a Malaysia-based company. This includes managers, engineers, IT specialists, accountants, and other professionals. Employers must obtain approval through the Expatriate Services Division (ESD) before hiring a foreign worker under this category.
Temporary Employment Pass (TEP) is designed for low to mid-level skilled workers in sectors such as manufacturing, construction, plantations, agriculture, and domestic service. This pass is typically issued for up to 2 years and is renewable.
Professional Visit Pass (PVP) is designed for international professionals who are employed by companies outside Malaysia but need to work temporarily in Malaysia. This is ideal for consultants, trainers, technicians, and after-sales service personnel working on short-term assignments lasting up to 12 months.
Social Visit Pass (PLS@XPATS) is a newer category launched in October 2022. It allows professionals to work in Malaysia for up to 30 days without requiring a full work visa. This is perfect for urgent business meetings, technical installations, training sessions, audits, and inspections.
Documents Required for Malaysian Work Visa
Personal Documents You Must Provide:
A valid passport with at least 18 months of remaining validity for Employment Pass applicants (12 months for other visa types)
Recent passport-sized photographs with a white background
An updated resume or curriculum vitae detailing your work history and skills
Your academic certificates and degrees (translated and notarized if they are not in English or Malay)
Any professional certifications relevant to your role
Work experience letters from your previous employers confirming your roles and responsibilities
Job Offer and Employer Documents Required:
A signed employment contract clearly stating your role, salary, and terms of employment
The company profile and business registration certificate (SSM certificate)
Proof that the company has quota approval to hire foreign workers
The ESD registration and completed application forms
Medical and Other Verification Documents:
A certified medical report from an approved Malaysian clinic (this can often be completed after you arrive in Malaysia)
A police clearance certificate from your home country if required for sensitive sectors
A security clearance for roles involving defense, government, or critical infrastructure
